Plinth Dedication Service

Remember County Heroes

A memorial has been dedicated to Staffordshire soldiers who fell in the Second World War in what could be the last ceremony its old comrades association will attend.

The dedication of the plinth at the National Memorial Arboretum followed a service at the weekend in honour of the members of the Staffordshire Yeomanry regiment who gave their lives.

It was organised by the Staffordshire Yeomanry Old Comrades Association.

Association spokesman John Sibson reflected on the ceremony and said: "Due to the age of the majority of our members this is likely to be the last official event."

The regiment began in 1794 and initially troops had to provide their own horses.

In 1900, 100 members of the regiment volunteered for service in the Boer War. The regiment which became a TA unit after the Second World War, was disbanded in the late 1960s. In the 1970s the name was resurrected as a squadron of the Mercian Yeomanry and present day TA soldiers have seen service in Iraq.
