The weather stayed fine for the National Memorial Arboretum's fourth royal visitor in six months. The Duke of Kent visited the Alrewas site on Monday to pay tribute to the late Lord Farnham, first president of the Tree Council. As Patron of the Tree Council the Duke planted a copper beech, a species chosen by Lord Farnham's family and planted at their estate in Ireland to mark his birth in 1931. A short service in the Chapel of Peace and Forgiveness, during which the Duke read a lesson, was followed by the planting ceremony.
Lady Diana Farnham, also assisted the Duke to plant the fitting memorial to her husband. During his tour of the site, the Duke saw how the tree he planted during his first visit in 1998 for the Queen's Golden Wedding is progressing. After the visit to the Arboretum the Duke was going to visit the Erasmus Darwin Museum in Lichfield. |
