The Purpose of the Friends
The most important job we can ask of Friends is for their support and encouragement. They don't have to do anything - although it's more fun if they do!
Here is a sample of the jobs which will always be needed.
Practical Tasks
We are often asked to take on tasks which are required at short
notice such as putting out signs and chairs before an event or manning a sales and information table. We also have an active group which undertakes tasks within the Arboretum itself. This could be
removing stakes or putting mulch round the plants to assist the
contractor. Apart from being of real help to the Arboretum these tasks are nearly always enjoyable!
Guides and Ushers
A large number of visitors and groups are now visiting the
Arboretum . Friends act as ushers and guides both in the Arboretum itself and in the Chapel. Guides are needed every day and for
special events, often at the weekends and in the evenings. You can offer to do a regular slot or come on an occasional basis. More
volunteers willing to do this would be a great help. Training is given for this from an experienced guide and regular updating walks are offered.
Publicity
It is very important for the Arboretum to be publicised in
general conversation. The Arboretum needs to get groups and
individuals interested in gifts for trees, and we need to help in spreading the word to encourage people to come and visit.
Benefits
We hope that being a 'Friend' will be a benefit in itself to those who join. The group organises its own events throughout the year which have included a Christmas walk, pub lunches, an Epiphany Service in the Chapel, a visit to Westonbirt Arboretum. (ideas are always
welcome). A Newsletter is produced and sent out quarterly to let members know what is going on (see below).

We have a uniform of yellow polo shirt and dark green sweat shirt each with our embroidered logo. These are good
quality and wash well. It is not compulsory to purchase these but we do ask those who are on duty at the Arboretum to wear them . They can be purchased when you join the Friends or at any other time.To purchase any clothing as below contact Jane Vaughan on 01283 712025. These prices are correct at 12th January 2007.
